Asylum is granted in Canada to anyone who meets the definition of a Convention refugee, or who is a person in need of protection. The Refugee Protection Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board decides, once an officer has found the claim eligible.

Two ways to file

At a port of entry - airport, seaport or land border. You have an eligibility interview with a Canada Border Services Agency officer, you complete the package and you provide fingerprints and a photograph.

From within Canada - after your arrival, through a complete application accompanied by all supporting documents.

What to know beforehand

Entering irregularly, away from an official port of entry, leads to an apprehension and a thorough examination, including security and background checks. Nothing guarantees that you will be allowed to remain in Canada: if it is found that you do not need protection, removal proceedings are started.
