Part of the time you spent abroad can be taken into account within the 730 days.<\/p>\n<p>If in doubt, consult us before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/nouveaux-immigrants\/carte-rp.html\">apply for or renew your PR card<\/a>. We will tell you if you qualify.<\/p>\n<p>If you become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/devenir-citoyen-canadien\/admissibilite\/deja-citoyen.html\">canadian citizen<\/a>, you will no longer need or have to hold an RP card.<\/p>\n<h2>Canadian citizenship<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1785 aligncenter img-responsive img-shadow\" src=\"http:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne-600x394.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne-768x504.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/wviscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/citoyennete-canadienne.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Apply for citizenship<\/h4>\n<p>To become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be a permanent resident;<\/li>\n<li>have lived in Canada for at least 3 of the last 5 years <strong>(1095 days)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>have filed their income tax return;<\/li>\n<li>pass a citizenship test;<\/li>\n<li>prove their language skills in French or English.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other requirements may apply.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"wb-cont\" dir=\"ltr\">You could be a Canadian citizen and not know it!<\/h4>\n<div class=\"mwsbodytext text parbase section\">\n<p>There are a few ways to obtain Canadian citizenship without having to apply. In these cases, you may still wish to obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/preuve-citoyennete\/admissibilite.html\">proof of citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are also situations where you might think you have become a citizen but you have not. In these cases, you might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/devenir-citoyen-canadien\/admissibilite.html\">eligible to apply for a grant of citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>You are probably a Canadian citizen if:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You were born in Canada;<\/li>\n<li>You became a citizen because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/modifications-loi\/regles-2009-2015.html\">changes to the Citizenship Act<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>You applied for and were granted Canadian citizenship (became a citizen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/services\/immigration-citoyennete\/centre-aide\/glossaire.html#naturalisation\">naturalized<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>You obtained Canadian citizenship as a minor when a parent or legal guardian applied for citizenship on your behalf;<\/li>\n<li>You were born abroad <strong>and<\/strong> at least one of your parents (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/services\/immigration-citoyennete\/centre-aide\/glossaire.html#parent-legal\">legal parent at birth\u00a0<\/a> or biological parent) either:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>was born in Canada,<\/li>\n<li>has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/services\/immigration-citoyennete\/centre-aide\/glossaire.html#naturalisation\">naturalized<\/a> in Canada <strong>before your birth<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>You are probably not a Canadian citizen if:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You were born in Canada to foreign diplomats;<\/li>\n<li>Your citizenship has been revoked (you have lost it);<\/li>\n<li>You have renounced Canadian citizenship and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/reintegrer-citoyennete-canadienne.html\">never applied to take it back<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>You do not automatically have Canadian citizenship if you:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cic.gc.ca\/francais\/centre-aide\/reponse.asp?qnum=357&amp;top=5\">married a Canadian citizen<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>You have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cic.gc.ca\/francais\/centre-aide\/resultats-par-sujet.asp?top=2\">adopted by a Canadian citizen;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>You have been granted asylum in Canada;<\/li>\n<li>You are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/immigration-refugies-citoyennete\/services\/citoyennete-canadienne\/devenir-citoyen-canadien\/admissibilite.html\">permanent resident<\/a> of Canada for many years;<\/li>\n<li>You were born abroad to Canadian parents, but neither of your parents was born or naturalized in Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>IRCC has posted the tool &quot;
